After kill, ps aux returns the following

user    16237 32.4 19.3 477072 401280 ?       S    23:17   3:27 /lib/ld-linux.so.2 /opt/Adobe/Reader8/Reader/intellinux/bin/acroread --display :0.0 -progressPipe 3 -exitPipe 4

This is the acroread 8.1.2 problem definitely. I found the debate about that problem on the http://blogs.adobe.com/acroread/2007/09/known_issues_with_adobe_reader_1.html

I just turn off two options, I hope it helps...

The problem creates many zombie processes as

user    1328  0.0  0.0      0     0 ?       Z    11:15   0:11 [ld-linux.so.2] <defunct>
user    21611  0.0  0.0      0     0 ?      Z    13:29   0:04 [ld-linux.so.2] <defunct>
user    24009  0.0  0.0      0     0 ?      Z    15:11   0:04 [ld-linux.so.2] <defunct>
user    25269  0.2  0.0      0     0 ?      Z    16:06   0:04 [ld-linux.so.2] <defunct>

defunct process can be killed by
ps -ef | grep defunct | awk '{ print $3 }' | xargs kill -9

The above command is dangerous (commented by one person)
"ps -ef | grep defunct | awk '{ print $3 }' | xargs kill -9" is dangerous because ps will sometimes list this command line itself (after all, it contains the string "defunct" in the call to grep). The kill command will then abort its own parent process, which is the current shell in most cases.
